Mayesville Presbyterian Church was founded in January of 1881, by members of the Mayesville community who desired a local place of worship. There were thirty-four charter members of the church, a majority of which were offspring of the Salem Black River and Mt. Zion Churches, which were older Presbyterian Churches in nearby communities.
The congregation met at Salem Lodge Hall, in Mayesville until the church could be constructed. The congregation endured crop failures and financial hardships, but remained committed and on April 17, 1892, the first church building was completed and dedicated.
In 1906, a bell was purchased for the church steeple. The adjacent Sunday School building with classrooms and an assembly hall was added in 1950. The grand building faithfully served its congregation until May 23, 1975, when the church was destroyed by fire.
The congregation immediately began the process of rebuilding and on April 17, 1977, the first service was held in the new church. The beautiful stained glass windows, produced by Willet Studios of Philadelphia, were donated by families of the church in memory of their loved ones, as were most of the furniture, the pews, and the appointments.
Since the time of its formation, the church has served as an integral part of the small farm-oriented community. It has comforted and supported many generations of families in the local as well as missionaries throughout the world.
Mayesville Presbyterian Church continues to be the center piece of this community by serving Christ and making the light of his gospel shine bright both locally , throughout the outlying community and around the world.
